How the bloody hell could he possibly be expected to sleep, when, less than two paces away on his left, Jane lay under the covers on her bed, breathing evenly?

It looked like she had no problem sleeping at all! For some unknown reason this vexed him. She seemed to have taken a liking to him, and maybe even more than that. But then, with a brisk “good night, Winston” she had blown out the candle on the night stand between the beds, before he heard the creaking of a bed frame and the rustle of sheets—and then silence.

Truly, the woman was a complete mystery! Blushing like a girl; ordering him about; and getting all teary when he told her that he really was just a rough clod of a man, who knew his place when it came to the attention of women.

For he did know his place. And the one time he had forgotten about it, it had almost cost him his life. He would never forget that.

And now he couldn’t sleep, but lay on his back, not daring to move for fear of waking her, staring at the low ceiling of the bedchamber and wondering what more surprises the next day would bring. After introducing Wesley, Ellie and their babe to the elderly landlords—which shouldn’t take up too much of his time—he planned for Jane and himself to catch the next available coach taking them to Sussex. Hopefully there would be a place for Jane inside, as the first morning coaches usually filled up fast. As for himself, he would surely be able to catch a ride on the driver’s board again.

He wondered what had happened with Christopher and Elizabeth. They had had a whole day to what Winston wryly thought of as getting to know each other better. Just how much better and what that meant was a different matter—though Winston suspected that things were moving inexorably in a direction that might well change not just Christopher’s life, but also his own.

For the man known to Bow Street, the London Metropolitan Police and the populace at large as the ‘Gentleman Thief’ would have to mend his ways, especially if he had been struck by that dangerous and sometimes fatal missile known as Cupid’s Arrow, aimed straight and true at his heart—which in Christopher’s case quite obviously had remained unprotected by frequent crossing.

And look where my neglect is getting me !

“Winston?” Jane’s whisper came from the other bed. “Are you awake?”

“I am now,” he muttered.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Wasn’t sleeping anyway.”

“But you said—”

“Just funning you.”

Her bed creaked; covers rustled.

“You’re a bad man,” she said lowly.

It sounded like her face now was turned in his direction.

“Like I told you.”

“Stop saying things like that!” she said heatedly. “For sure, you’re no popinjay or toff, but you are a gentleman in my eyes. As, I’m sure, you are in the eyes of your Earl.”

“He’s my friend and likes me, so he looks upon me more kindly than most people.”

“I like you, too!”

“Thank you,” he said.
